This funky Swordfish sculpture was created by Fairhaven artist Paul Helgesen. Made of metal and wood, the piece has two hooks for hanging (best to hang inside), and measures 4 ft. long from tip to tail. If you missed Paul’s recent exhibit “Some Things Fishy” in the Fishing Heritage Center’s gallery, here’s your chance to own a piece of his whimsical one-of-a-kind artwork!
Paul Helgesen’s fascination with all things nautical began over forty years ago on a tiny remote island off the coast of Nova Scotia. Life on the island is like going back in time. The year-round residents are lobstermen who live in a tiny community with their boats, dirt roads, a two-room schoolhouse, an old fire truck and a little ferry that goes to and from the mainland. This way of life is my inspiration for “Some Things Fishy”. His art is created with rough sawn lumber, copper and brass, as well as pieces of rusted steel picked up on roads and beaches. The work is a mixture of whimsy and realism – – some of it serious and some of it ridiculous.
