Sharks Come Crusin

One Saturday in November of 2002, in a three family tenement on Jewett Street in Providence, RI, I heard the song Spanish Ladies for the first time while watching the film “Jaws” on television. At that moment, I discovered a musical history that was a genuine to New England—something I had been in search of for years.

In December of 2003 Seth Forden joined in on bass guitar and vocal harmony. In the fall of 2004, Ed Wenzl came aboard as drummer. Paul Dube began playing accordion in 2006 shortly before we recorded “Live at Jake’s” at Jake’s Bar and Grill on Richmond Street in Providence, RI. In late summer of 2007, Eric Wohgemuth joined in on banjo and Jonathan Cannon on fiddle. In 2008 we released Four Years Before the Mast, our first studio recording.

The mission of Sharks Come Cruisin is to shed light on these forgotten songs, to remind us of a day when music and work went hand and hand, and most importantly, to bring people together to holler, shout, and sing along to songs of drinking and sinking.

Concert: North Sea Gas @ New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center

“North Sea Gas”, Dave Gilfillan, Grant Simpson, Ronnie (Mac) McDonald, is one of Scotland’s most popular folk bands with great vocals and tremendous three part harmonies. Guitars, mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki, harmonica, whistles, bodhrans, banjo and good humor are all part of the entertainment!

They have released 19 albums with “When We Go Rolling Home” being the most recent and are constantly adding new material to their shows. Their album, “The Fire and the Passion of Scotland” was Album of the Year at Celtic Radio in the U.S., winning first place in the “Jigs and Reels” category as well for the set of tunes on the album. They also hold Gold and Silver Disc awards from the Scottish Music Industry Association for: “Dark Island;” “Lochanside;” “Glencoe Massacre;” “Edinburgh Toon;” “Rosslyn;” “Tak A Dram Afore Ye Go;” and “The Fire and the Passion of Scotland.”

Their show, and their albums, consists of traditional, contemporary and self-penned material put together in a style all their own along with their humor and story- telling. This proves popular during their regular tours of Scotland, America, Canada, Germany, Austria, Estonia, Turkey, and many other destinations both in and outside of their home in Scotland. Every year there are appearances on TV and Radio on both sides of the Atlantic including “Late Night Saturday,” “Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour,” and “Song of the Mountains” shown on select PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) TV stations in the U.S.

Here’s what Celtic Radio – Boston said about “North Sea Gas”: “The band displays an attachment and a reverence for their roots from the very start. The music feels genuine, unpretentious and spontaneous, with a fondness for storytelling and beautiful harmonies.”

Tickets are $12/members, $15/non-members. Available on-line, at the Center gift shop, and at the door. Doors open at 6:30. On street parking is free!
