Dock-u-mentaries: Working the Boats: Masters of the Craft @ ZOOM
Jul 17 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Join us on Zoom for our July Dock-u-mentaries screening and discussion of the film series, Working the Boats: A Cape Verdean American Longshoremen Union by filmmaker Claire Andrade-Watkins. You can also watch the films on your own time on Kanopy or Youtube.

Click here to join the Zoom meeting at 7:00pm.

Longshoremen are an important part of the working waterfront, unloading cargo ships in the port of New Bedford. The Cape Verdean community in New Bedford has long been involved in the International Longshoremen’s Association Union. This film explores the ILA and the Cape Verdean community in Providence, RI.

This film screening is a part of our series of programs related to our latest exhibit, “We Came to Fish, We Came to Work: Stories of Immigration.” This exhibit explores stories of immigration and cultural heritage on New Bedford’s working waterfront. Over the next 8 months, we will look at cultural heritage through a variety of programs including film screenings, cooking and craft demos, performances, and talks, which will be offered virtually until we are able to re-open the Center.

The Center’s 2020 exhibits and programs are funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Creative Commonwealth Initiative, and the Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, and New Bedford Cultural Councils. Our film series is sponsored by BankFive.

The Making of “VESSELS” – Behind the Scenes with MASARY Studios @ Virtual Event
Jul 30 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Join us to hear how Boston based MASARY Studios joined with New Bedford fishing community to get an in-depth look at the everyday life of fishermen going to sea to bring their bounty of fish to port. MASARY’s video and sound artwork titled “VESSELS”  is about the boats, the men, the sea, the work and the catch. Fishing crews graciously opened up their world to the artists, allowing them to experience first hand what it takes to be a fisherman in New Bedford. Capturing images and sound from the docks and on the Ruthie B, MASARY Studios created a dramatic and poetic large-scale artwork that brings the N.B. waterfront inland to three buildings on Union Street in downtown New Bedford.

Join us for this live zoom talk concluding with Q&A session offering a chance for the audience to be part of the conversation. Click here to visit DATMA’s Facebook page where you will find the live stream.

This virtual conversation is co-hosted by DATMA and the Fishing Heritage Center. New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center provided research support for MASARY Studios while they created their artwork. “VESSELS” is presented by DATMA.
