In 1979, a Vietnamese refugee shoots and kills a white crab fisherman at the public town docks in Seadrift, TX. What began as a dispute over fishing territory erupts into violence and ignites a maelstrom of boat burnings, KKK intimidation, and other hostilities against Vietnamese refugees along the Gulf Coast. Set during the early days of Vietnamese arrival in the U.S., Seadrift is a feature documentary that examines the circumstances that led up to the shooting and its dramatic aftermath, and reveals the unexpected consequences that continue to reverberate today. This summer, New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center will offer a series of small group walking tours of downtown New Bedford and the working waterfront. These tours will provide guests an opportunity to learn about New Bedfords history and fishing industry while being outside and socially distanced.
Tours will explore topics including the history of the fishing industry, life in a fishing family, and the ins and outs of a contemporary waterfront. Group size will be limited to 10 guests and a tour guide. Guests are encouraged to wear masks.

Renowned folklorist Helen Creighton single-handedly compiled North America’s largest collection of folklore and music, much of which would have disappeared forever if not for her tenacity, collecting stories and songs from the Gaelic singers of Cape Breton, French Acadians, the Mi’kmaw, and the Black communities of Nova Scotia. Her name became a household word throughout the fishing villages, towns, and farms, Ironically, in collecting legends, Creighton became one herself.
This talk is a part of our series of programs related to our latest exhibit, “We Came to Fish, We Came to Work: Stories of Immigration.” This exhibits explores stories of immigration and cultural heritage on New Bedford’s working waterfront. Over the next 8 months, we will look at cultural heritage through a variety of programs including film screenings, cooking and craft demos, performances, and talks, which will be offered virtually until we are able to re-open the Center.
