We are holding an in-person screening of the 2022 Fisherpoets Gathering tribute to poet and musician Jon Campbell at 7 PM on April 15th. The virtual tribute includes performances from Marina Campbell, Larry Kaplan, Moe Bowstern, Jon Broderick, Dano Quinn, Geno Leech, Mary Garvey, and Joe Houlihan providing their own interpretations on Jon Campbell’s music and poetry.

Mid-Day Mug Up: Film Talk with Alastair Cole

Director Alastair Cole gives a behind-the-scenes discussion of Iorram, the first feature-length film entirely in Scots Gaelic which explores the past and present fishing community in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. Iorram is a lyrical experience of this community through archived sound recordings of stories and songs in the mid-20th century interspersed with contemporary traditional Scottish folk music scored by Aidan O’Rourke. Zoom link here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85432525844.

Courtesy of the FHC and Cinema New Bedford, see a FREE in-person screening of the first cinema documentary entirely in Scots Gaelic, Iorram (Boat Song) on May 17, 2022 at 7 PM!  Iorram is a lyrical experience of the fishing community in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, explored through archived sound recordings of stories and songs in the mid-20th century interspersed with contemporary traditional Scottish folk music scored by Aidan O’Rourke.

Over thirty-seven years and stronger than ever!! “North Sea Gas” is one of Scotland’s most popular folk bands with great vocals and tremendous three part harmonies. Guitars, mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki, harmonica, whistles, bodhrans, banjo and good humor are all part of the entertainment. They have received Gold and Silver Disc awards from the Scottish Music Industry Association and regularly have sold out shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and around the world!

North Sea Gas will be playing at the Center on May 26, 2022 at 7 PM. Doors 6:30 PM. Tickets $12 members, $15 non-members. Purchase online through Brown Paper Tickets https://northseagas.bpt.me/ or in-person at the Center’s Gift Shop.

Chesapeake singer-songwriter Janie Meneely and Dutch-born traditional balladeer Rob van Sante join forces for an evening of maritime music from the Bay and beyond! Rob adds his virtuoso guitar to the array of Janie’s originals, while Janie adds vocal harmonies to Rob’s traditional ballads.

July AHA! Night: “Some Things Fishy: The Art of Paul Helgesen”

July AHA! Night is a double whammy from NBFHC – come to the Center free of charge to see the opening of our newest gallery exhibit, “Some Things Fishy: The Art of Paul Helgesen!” Paul Helgesen makes whimsical fish sculptures inspired by his time on a small Nova Scotian island with a big fishing community. All pieces in the exhibit will be available for purchase through our Gift Shop.

Don’t forget to bring the kiddos – as part of the Kids Rule AHA! Night theme, kids can use found objects to create their own funky fish art inspired by Helgesen’s work!
