The Center will be open free of charge on AHA! Night, plus kids can come make an instrument from 5:30-7 PM and join in a Foo Foo Band led by Jeff Angeley from 7-8 PM. Foo foo bands were impromptu 19th century bands made of a fishing vessel’s crew. Games, a DJ, a bubble show, balloon animals, and event partner booths. There’s something for everyone!
Dock-u-mentaries: Whales of Gold
8.19.2022 | 7 PM | Free | National Park Theater, 33 William Street NB
Whales of Gold, directed by Lucia Duncan, explores the winter migration of grey whales, tourists, scientists, and conservationists descend upon the San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja California, Mexico. Their presence – and the establishment of Latin America’s largest biosphere reserve – brings profound change to the lagoon’s small fishing community. Whales of Gold raises questions about how to conserve habitat and species in a way that also sustains the livelihoods of local people. FREE tickets can be booked online at Brown Paper Tickets as seating is limited: https://august2022docks.bpt.me/

Modelmaking Demonstration: Captain Alan Curtis
A career scalloper out of New Bedford, Alan Curtis has been making models of old-style Eastern Rig Scallopers for many years, often on commission from boat owners. His models are featured in our newest gallery exhibit, Fishboats: Art of the Industry, and he’s coming to the Center to talk about his craft. Drop in to the Center to hear from Alan from 1-3 PM on October 29. He will also be working on his current model and can answer your questions about the process! Be sure to stay for a while to check out the work of the rest of our Fishboats artists in the Gallery.
This will be the first in a series of monthly model making demonstrations to accompany our Fishboats exhibit programming. Check back soon for more dates!
