We will be running a special Double Feature for this month’s Dock-u-mentaries, and showing “Spirit of Newfoundland and Labrador Fishing Communities” along with “Cod: Renewing A Bountiful Catch.” FREE tickets can be booked online at Brown Paper Tickets: https://july2022docks.bpt.me

“Spirit of Newfoundland and Labrador Fishing Communities”: This film explores the spirit behind that renewal–a spirit that is manifested through music about the inshore fishing way of life in northern Newfoundland and coastal Labrador, and through community values such volunteerism and helping one another in times of need.

“Cod: Renewing a Bountiful Catch”: This video was created with the help of fish harvesters and scientists from Memorial University of Newfoundland, who describe the abundance of cod stocks pre-1990s and what all of us can do to help with recovery of this important and iconic species.

AHA! Night: Family Fun at the Fishing Heritage Center

The Center will be open free of charge on AHA! Night, plus kids can come make an instrument from 5:30-7 PM and join in a Foo Foo Band led by Jeff Angeley from 7-8 PM. Foo foo bands were impromptu 19th century bands made of a fishing vessel’s crew. Simultaneously, in our parking lot, Massachusetts Health Connector (with the FHC, Fishing Partnership, and PACE) will be hosting a fair! Games, a DJ, a bubble show, balloon animals, and event partner booths. There’s something for everyone!

Whales of Gold, directed by Lucia Duncan, explores the winter migration of grey whales, tourists, scientists, and conservationists descend upon the San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja California, Mexico. Their presence – and the establishment of Latin America’s largest biosphere reserve – brings profound change to the lagoon’s small fishing community. Whales of Gold raises questions about how to conserve habitat and species in a way that also sustains the livelihoods of local people. September AHA! Night: Fishboats: Art of the Industry Gallery Opening

Join us for the opening of our next exhibit, “Fishboats: Art of the Industry!” The exhibit focuses on artistic renderings of boats in different media (paintings, photographs, wood carvings, and more) made by people who are involved with the commercial fishing industry. There will also be a demonstration with remote-controlled lobster boat models, and as always, the Center is open free of charge for you to see!
“Fishboats: Art of the Industry” is supported in part by a grant from the Westport Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust administered by Bank of America, along with support from the Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, and New Bedford Cultural Councils, as well as BankFive and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

A moving documentary on the extraordinary life of world-renowned Maine Master Boat Builder Ralph Stanley. Stanley, the son of a lobsterman, grew up on Mt. Desert Island and began building wooden boats in the early 1950’s. He has built more than 70 fine wooden boats. In 1999 Stanley received a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, recognizing his artistic excellence and contribution to our national traditional arts heritage. Make Waves: Seafood Soirée @ Cisco Brewers New Bedford

Making Waves, A Seafood Soirée – a gala to benefit New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center. This annual event celebrates the bounty of the sea. The 2022 event takes place under a tent at Cisco Brewers New Bedford overlooking the waterfront. Guests will enjoy local seafood in the nation’s most valuable fishing port, while watching the boats as they head out to sea and return with their catch. Taste more than a dozen dishes featuring local seafood and seasonal ingredients, prepared by the area’s finest chefs.  Tickets include two beverages (choose from a selection of wine, beer, and signature cocktails). The event also features a “Fluke and Flounder” chance auction, live music, handmade chocolates, and coffee.

Tickets are $125 per person and will be available via Brown Paper Tickets beginning August 15, 2022.

Renowned New Bedford photographer, former General Manager at Bergie’s Seafood, and previously Chairman of the Center’s board, Phillip Mello will be at the Center on September 29th signing copies of his new book “Working Waterfront: A Portrait of New Bedford’s Fishing Industry.”
Bring your copy of the book if you’ve already bought it, or purchase a copy day-of. We will have plenty of copies of this fascinating book full of Phil’s gorgeous photography!
In addition, Turk’s Seafood will be providing delicious sushi to snack on for the event.

From 7-8 PM, Larry will perform songs about working boats including his well-known songs about Vineyard Captain Zeb Tilton. The Center will be open free of charge starting at 5:00 PM – don’t forget to check out the unique items in our gift shop!
