New Bedford, MA – The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center is pleased to present a boatload of family fun during February vacation week. Visitors can do a scavenger hunt, try on survival suits and fishing gear, and see the newest exhibit Frozen Asset: Ice Making and the New Bedford Fishing Industry. Resident artists will be on hand February 22 to February 25 to demonstrate their craft. In addition, a family concert with Janie Meneely and Rob van Sante will entertain the entire family.
Marlinspike artist, Erika Hamer, will demonstrate knot tying and will teach visitors simple knots on Thursday February 22nd and Friday 23rd from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. Author and marlinspike artist, Barbara Merry will demonstrate her work and share the history of marlinspike work on Saturday February 24th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
On Sunday, February 18th and Sunday, February 25th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., sailor’s valentine artist, Bill Boffa, will demonstrate how he creates these beautiful works of art and will share the history of the valentine. In addition, his work will be available for sale with a 10% discount.
Janie Meneely and Rob van Sante will perform a special evening concert on Friday, February 23rd from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This family friendly concert will take the listener on a journey of maritime music from the Chesapeake Bay and beyond. Admission is a suggested donation of $15 per family. Doors open at 6:30.
The Center is open Thursday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Daily admission to the Center is free. The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center is dedicated to preserving and presenting the story of the commercial fishing industry past, present, and future through archives, exhibits, and programs.
