Ceremonies & Celebrations explores the history of the New Bedford Scallop Festival, Working Waterfront Festival, Blessing of the Fleet, and Fishermen’s Memorial Service. More than just an exploration of waterfront celebrations, past and present, this exhibit is a reflection on the importance of community in the commercial fishing industry.
This exhibit features photos, videos, and objects from the Center’s archival collection as well as objects on loan from community partners including the New Bedford Port Society, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, and Spinner Publications. The exhibit will remain on display at FHC through spring 2026.
Ceremonies and Celebrations will be supported by a number of tie-in programs and events throughout the summer and fall including the return of the scallop shucking contest in August, a Working Waterfront Festival retrospective panel discussion in September, and a screening of the 1963 film “The Pearl of the Atlantic” in October.
