Women’s Images in Myths and Marketing

Once upon a time, women on board working vessels were considered bad luck. Some believed they would anger the sea gods, leading to storms. Others assumed they would be a distraction or unable to handle the physical exertion. Nevertheless, many whaling captains brought their wives along on long voyages and whaling vessels often had female figureheads. Boats of all kinds are referred to as “she” and many are named after mothers, wives, or daughters. Throughout history, images of women have been used to advertise seafood.
