On December 8, 2022 at 6 PM, we are hosting an illustrated talk by Steve Kennedy, painter and longtime photographer for Commercial Fisheries News, who is featured in our exhibit “Fishboats: Art of the Industry.” As always, the Center is open free of charge starting at 5 PM. Program begins 6 PM.

On the east coast of Canada, a place whose name sounds strangely familiar. The small town of Lunenburg, west of Halifax, was founded in 1753 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the 19th century, Lunenburg was one of the richest towns in the British Empire, becoming prosperous through fishing and shipbuilding. This documentary is a touching portrait of a town and region that, after many years of decline, has been transformed from a prosperous center of fishing and wooden shipbuilding into a bustling jewel on the Canadian coast. Modelmaking Demonstration: Captain Alan Curtis (Part 2!)

Alan Curtis returns to the Center to discuss his modelmaking craft! A career scalloper out of New Bedford, Alan Curtis has been making models of old-style Eastern Rig scallopers for many years, often on commission from boat owners. His models are featured in our newest gallery exhibit, Fishboats: Art of the Industry, and he’s coming to the Center to talk about his craft.

Drop in to the Center to hear from Alan from 1-3 PM on February 11. He will also be working on his current model and can answer your questions about the process! Be sure to stay for a while to check out the work of the rest of our Fishboats artists in the Gallery. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Barbara Walsh will talk about her newest book “The Lobster Lady: Maine’s 102-year-old Legend.”

Walsh will share stories about interviewing and writing about Ginny Oliver, the oldest lobster catcher in Maine, and maybe even the world. Ginny, who is 102, has been lobstering since she was eight years old. People often ask Ginny when she plans on retiring. She smiles and tells them, “When I die.”

The Lobster Lady book inspires people of all ages from five to 105, Walsh says. “Ginny’s message,” Walsh adds, “is keep moving and doing what you love.”

The Lobster Lady is Walsh’s sixth book. A long-time journalist, she enjoys writing true stories about special Maine people.
